Michael Piccirillo
Having qualified from London University with a degree in Medical Microbiology, I made a life-changing decision and moved directly into healthcare business management. I have supplemented my science training with specific professional courses as well as classical Marketing and Business Administration qualifications.
However, my experience comes from practical achievements in a diverse range of jobs in both the commercial and non-profit medical sectors around the globe.
I cut my teeth first in pharma sales, before moving into diagnostic sales and marketing in the UK. I now have over 35 years of experience in a range of healthcare businesses, from developing CHF1 billion product lines for Roche and creating new multi-million-dollar biotechnology distribution channels for Oxis International to redesigning and re-engineering hospital diagnostic departments and spine centers in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America.
In the non-profit health sector, I built from scratch the world’s largest spine community (within the AO Foundation, Davos). As Executive Director, I oversaw every aspect of building the organization from the ground up. Following the success of AOSpine, the AO then asked me to transform their 50-year-old Trauma division—AOTrauma.
After some years consulting with spine centers, academic societies, and startups, I returned to the For-Profit sector to create a new Clinical Professional Development department for NuVasive in San Diego.
After leaving NuVasive, I returned to consulting, working on projects with different spine societies – North American Spine Society (NASS), Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), ArabSpine, as well as supporting start-up companies with their education, KOL, and commercialization strategies. I also do volunteer work.
In 2019, I stepped down from chairing the Trustees for Cauda Equina Society, UK, and have taken up the Chair of the Education Committee for SPINE20, a global spine advocacy group linked to the G20.
I am continuing to offer consulting services within the spine community, but also in other medical areas. My business leadership mantra is based upon: “above average performance from every individual means above average performance for the organization”. I believe I am known for "getting things done" and driving results through collaboration, partnerships, and relationships.
